Seafarers’ Health Information Programme

Deep-sea ships spend a lot of time a long way from land. While on board their ships, seafarers are isolated from quality medical care accessible ashore; both in emergency situations and for primary healthcare.

The International Seafarers’ Welfare and Assistance Network (ISWAN)  provides posters, booklets and other informational material through their website which is available for free download.  Health, as it is defined by the World Health Organization, is considered to be a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being. The SHIP campaign recognises the fact that seafarers comprise one of the most isolated  working groups in the world in relation to medical care. Information on health thus assumes a far greater importance. SHIP offers useful and practical information, focusing on the lifestyles of individual seafarers and the living conditions on board ship.

By taking into account the specific experiences and needs of seafarers, SHIP provides practical support for seafarers so that they can develop their own personal skills in order to stay healthy.

Altogether ten topics are discussed: Food Safety, Staying fit on board, Tips on traveling safely, the importance of eating Healthy Food, Being alert to the menace of Malaria, problems of being Overweight, Sexually Transmitted Infections- HIV & AIDS, Mental Care, Dental Care and Skin Care. Practical and easily understood, all are available from the on-line shop.
