Country wide seafarer protection scheme underway in Nigeria

A country wide effort to protect seafarers from Coronavirus is underway in Nigeria, thanks to a grant from the ITF Seafarers’ Trust Covid-19 Emergency Fund.

All twelve ports and terminals in the country are being covered by the scheme from the Martime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN). It includes the distribution of thousands of sets of PPE and an education programme on how to prevent infection from the virus.

Com. (Prince) Adewale Adeyanju – President General of MWUN said: “Seafarers are on the absolute frontline of this crisis and keeping them safe needs to be our number one priority. This grant from the Trust means that we’re able to offer practical support so that maritime workers feel safer and more confident to do their work in the ports and terminals around our country. Ultimately this will save lives.”

Head of the Trust Katie Higginbottom said: “Being able to support a coordinated effort like this that spans the whole of Nigeria is a real achievement. Supplies of PPE are just so crucial and the union is well placed, with representatives in ports and terminals, to make sure those get to maritime workers when they need them.”
